Theme in Black American history:

Self-help and
Self-Determination

We've come this far by faith, and not only by faith, but by works.
We've looked out for ourselves and helped each other to get by.
We've still got to do that today and tomorrow.

Poet Lucille Clifton told us in this stanza of her poem, "Listen Children--"

Listen
we have been ashamed
hopeless tired mad
but always
all ways
we loved us

We have always loved each other
children all ways

Pass it on

Encourage each other by passing on the poem and the story of our helping tradition.
Inform the community about ways to continue our helping tradition.

Warren Ballentine calls for Economic Boycott, Friday Nov. 2, 2007
Warren Ballentine, XM 169 radio host known as "The People's Attorney," is urging Black people to engage in a nationwide economic boycott on Friday, November 2, 2007. The boycott is being organized to protest disparities and abuses in the criminal justice system, highlighted by the Jena, Louisiana case in which the district attorney levied egregious charges against six Black boys for engaging in a school fight. The fight was one of several racially charged incidents-including at least one white student approaching several black students with a shotgun--stemming from some Black students sitting under a so-called "white tree" last fall. “The ‘blackout’ is just to show us that we can do it. We will follow up with more economic development actions later on,” Ballentine said. www.thetruthfighters.com
